Public space is where a city either feels like a community or doesn't. Parks, the beach, plazas, and markets are the places residents actually run into each other — and they're some of the highest-leverage investments a small city can make.
Where I stand
Programming is often cheaper than construction. A well-run market, a maintained park, or a reactivated plaza can change how a place feels long before any capital project breaks ground.
What I'd focus on
- Consistent maintenance and safety in every park, not just the visible ones
- Regular, recurring programming instead of one-off events
- Activate plazas and underused public space with local operators
- Family and youth recreation across all neighborhoods
